Prof. Shuguang Cui Wins 2023 State Science and Technology Awards
Shuguang Cui, X.Q. Presidential Chair Professor and Dean of Future Network of Intelligence Institute at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, along with a team from Beijing Jiaotong University, were jointly awarded the second prize in the category of the State Natural Science Award of the 2023 State Science and Technology Awards held in Beijing on June 24, 2024.
Cui was awarded for his contribution in information processing and transmission in complex environments in recent years.
Over the past decade since its establishment, CUHK-Shenzhen has experienced rapid development in research, and this award not only recognizes Professor Cui's academic achievements, but also signifies a new milestone in the University's research strength, showcasing accumulated efforts and breakthrough achievements.
Professor Cui is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a highly cited researcher globally, an IEEE Fellow, one of the first batch of outstanding talents in Shenzhen's talent program, and a member of the Shenzhen Decision Making Advisory Committee.
Cui obtained his Ph.D. from Stanford University in the United States in 2005, and subsequently held teaching positions up to a distinguished professor at various universities in the United States such as UC Davis. In 2018, he joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, where he served as the Executive Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, the Presidential Chair Professor, Director of the Future Network of Intelligence Institute, Director of the CUHK(SZ)-JD Joint AI Lab, and Director of the Key Laboratory for Future Intelligent Networks in Guangdong Province. His current research interests focus is on the deep integration of communication networks and AI technologies.
Professor Cui has published nearly 400 papers in top-tier international journals and conferences, chaired multiple IEEE international conferences and program committees, served as a board member and chair of the steering committee for IEEE flagship journals and as the chair of the IEEE Wireless Technology Committee. He received the Best Paper Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2012, was elected an IEEE Fellow in 2013, and was selected as Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE ComSo, selected as the Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher, and was listed in the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds by ScienceWatch in 2014.
In the years 2020 to 2022, Professor Cui received the Best Paper Award at IEEE ICC, IEEE ICIP and IEEE GLOBECOM, the Innovative Applications Award of China ICT, the Best Paper Award at IEEE WCNC, the First Open Source Graph Data Set Award of the CCF Chinagraph, the first prize in Natural Sciences from the China Electronics Society, and the first prize for Technical Inventions from the China Institute of Communications. In 2023, he received the IEEE Marconi Best Paper Award, the IEEE WTC Wireless Technology Achievements Award, and was elected as the editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (CCF-A Core Journal), becoming the first scholar working in Chinese mainland to hold this position. In 2024, Professor Cui was awarded the second prize of the 2023 State Natural Science Award.
