Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Advanced Materials Product Engineering

Advanced materials product engineering aims at the production of polymers with high-performance and multi-functionalization. It is based on the theories of polymerization kinetics and transport phenomena (including flow, heat and mass transfer) in industrial polymerization process. Through modeling and simulation of polymerization kinetics as well as the design, control and optimization of polymerization processes, the precise customization of the chain structure of functional polymers can be realized, which can provide guidance on the construction, optimization and upgrading of polymerization production lines.
The key laboratory focuses on two research directions: advanced polymer product engineering (APPE) and composite materials (CM). APPE direction is committed to developing advanced technologies for polymer manufacturing and independent intellectual properties for high-end polymer products, with a particular motivation in innovating industrial technologies for upgrading polymer products. CM direction is dedicated to design and synthesis of functional porous composite materials having synergetic “1+1>>2” effects, and to explore their applications in such areas as new energy, environment, and marine economy.
The key laboratory is led by Professor Shiping ZHU, Fellow of Royal Society of Canada and Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is a Chair Professor in the School of Science and Engineering and currently serves as a Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen. The research team is dedicated to pursuing a world-class excellence in the high-end fields of materials research and applications, with a major focus on advancing manufacturing technologies required to meet the national strategic needs. Through the construction of this key laboratory, the team is aiming to build a technological innovation platform that integrates fundamental research, product development, and talent cultivation.
