Abstract:

Good and evil are fundamental, universal value categories. The belief and value systems of virtually all religions and cultures share a moral imperative to guide people toward good and away from evil. The conviction that divine beings oversee a system of retribution, in which good is rewarded with blessings and evil with misfortune, was an intricate design conceived by ancient Chinese sages based on their sharp insights into human nature and the ways of the world. It works in much the same way as analogous beliefs found in other world religions and cultures.

Zongli LU is the Master of Ling College and Professor of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He previously served as the Deputy Director of the Research Section of the Warring States, Qin and Han Periods at the Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; a Professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen. He has authored and edited works including Deities of Chinese Folk Religion, A Dictionary of Official Posts in Pre-modern China, Rumors in Han Dynasties, and Deities in the Human World.
